Dig for Gems FAQ

When are you open?
A: We are open by reservation on Saturdays from 9AM to 3PM, and on certain holidays.

How do I make a reservation?
A: You can purchase your reservation HERE

How long is my reservation?
A: The whole day from 9AM to 3PM.

Do I have to be there at 9AM?  Can I show up late?
A: You can show up after 9.  But we recommend getting here as early as possible.  Doing so will give you the most time to dig, and the best chance at finding something good.

I've never done this before, will someone be there to help?
A: Yes!  If it is your first time, we will show you what to look for and what to do.  We will be there throughout the day to help answer any questions.

What can I find at your site?
A: The four main minerals that are specific to our site are Benitoite, Neptunite, Joaquinite, and Natrolite.

What are my chances of finding something?
A: Most people find something, but the trick is finding something good.  On average about 1 in 20 people will walk away with a stone of value.  Remember we can't guarantee that you will find something, but the people that work the hardest usually do the best.

What have other people have found?
A: We post pictures every week of all the good finds on our social media.  And occasionally when something really good is found, we'll make a short video of it.  Videos can be found on our Great Finds or YouTube pages.

Is there a limit on how much material I can go through?
A: No.  There is no limit on the amount of material you can go through.

Is there a limit on how much material I can take home?
A: Yes.  For your admission fee, you can take home up to one quart sized bag of finds per person.  If it fits in your bag, you can keep it!  Don't worry!  It's more than it sounds.

What if I find something too large to fit in my bag?
A: If you find something too large for your bag (like a yard rock), and you would like to take it home, we can price it for you.  When we do that, we estimate the piece's value and start from there.  Rocks with no value we usually give away.
REMEMBER: Benitoite is a small gemstone, think diamond size.  The vast majority of material you find will fit into your bag.

Should I bring any tools?
A: No need!  We supply all the necessary digging tools.

What other things should I bring with me?
A: Lawn chairs can be a good idea.  Remember to bring your lunches and drinks.  Hats and sunscreen for summer, warm clothing for winter.

Will we be going onto an actual mine or into a mine shaft?
A: No.  Ore from the mine is dumped into our screening field for you to go through.  It's nice and easy, no spelunking required!

Do you offer tours of the mine?
A: We do not.  The mine itself is not open to the public due to safety issues.  Trespassers at the mine will be prosecuted.

Do you offer a service to cut and set benitoite into jewelry?
A: We are hoping to offer this kind of service soon.

What forms of payment do you take?
A: We accept cash and all major credit cards.  We can not accept checks.

I have family/friends coming with me that will not be digging, do they still have to pay?
A: No.  Everyone has to sign a liability waver to be on premises, but you do not have to pay if you are not participating.

I go digging for profit.  Is your site right for me?
A: Normally we say no; you would probably not enjoy the services we provide.  Our dig is tailored more towards families, rock-hounds, and those who want to relax and have fun in the outdoors for the day.  For the truly serious diggers, you are probably looking for a more intense experience than what we provide.  We apologize for the inconvenience.
